Recap #3: August 2020

Well, I made it through the summer! I’m starting my third semester of college this week and thank goodness for that. I’m in desperate need for structure in my life. I will be busier in the coming weeks, so I may post only once a week until I’m settled into the semester.

Also coming in September is Self-Published Fantasy Month! I love fantasy in all it’s shapes and forms, so I can’t wait for this opportunity to explore a new side of the genre. Anyone can participate in SPFM just by reading a self-published book. I will be spending the next month reading and reviewing self-published books, so keep an eye out for my recommendations!

7 Books I Can’t Wait to Read

I started the month out with a list of 7 books I was most excited about on my TBR. Many of these books were recommended by my favorite blogs and others are sequels to my favorite reads from this year. I’m currently reading By Sea and Sky by Antoine Bandele and The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang from this list. Both are living up to expectations! I expect to finish them in the next couple of days so I can start The Chaos Circus by R. Dylan for my first SPFM read. My first review for SPFM will be on By Sea and Sky.

Awkward by Gurpreet Kuar

My second August post was a review of a humorous YA novella. Did I mention it is self-published? If you want to participate in SPFM but fantasy isn’t your style, try picking up this high school rom-com.

Pros and Cons of Different POVs in Books

This post was inspired by The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie, which is primarily written in second-person POV. Crazy right? It’s not a writing style I often come across in books, so I had to write a post discussing the pros and cons of different POVs. Personally, my favorite is third-person limited.

Minnie-Reviews on 2 Nonfiction Books for Book Bloggers and Cat Lovers

I stepped away from fantasy reviews this month, which gave me time to read and review two nonfiction books by Sarah Davis. Both are short reads and perfect for anyone looking for blogging tips or a pick me up.

Manga Mania: Goblin Slayer

The last post for August was Isabel’s second guest post, full thoughtful and humorous commentary on a fantasy graphic novel.  Goblin Slayer is perfect for fans of graphic novels and dark fantasy.

Wrap Up

As I mentioned before, I plan on posting less now that classes are starting. Hopefully, once I’ve gotten used to my course schedule I’ll be able to post twice a week again.

I didn’t post any fantasy reviews on my blog this month, and I think I needed that break. Fortunately, the next month will include as many reviews of self-published fantasy novels as I can fit in.

On to September!

May your days be full of magic and dragons,

Peyton
