I saw Caitlin post the Top Female Authors on Her TBR on her blog, Realms of My Mind, and I had to join in. I tend to shy away from posts about my TBR because I’m a hopeless mood reader, and can leave books on my TBR for months to years. But today I’ll make an exception to talk about the top 10 female authors on my TBR and why I’m excited to read their books.
**Note: I’ve linked the covers to the authors’ websites in case you’re interested in learning more about these authors or their books**
Top 10 Female Authors on My TBR
1. N.K. Jemisin, author of The City We Became (Great Cities)
I previously read and reviewed another of N.K. Jemisin’s books, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, which was a delightful high fantasy with a romantic subplot. She’s one of the authors I’m most excited to read so hopefully it doesn’t take me too long to read more from her.
2. Carol A. Park, author of Banebringer and Sweetblade (The Heretic Gods Series)
Carol Park has been on my TBR for what seems like forever, but despite that, I am still excited to pick up her books. From the fabulous covers to the intriguing premise of a man cursed to bear the dreaded power of a goddess, Park’s Heretic Gods series sounds right up my alley. The only reason I haven’t already picked up these books is I’m already working my way through several big fantasy series. I want to clear up my other commitments before picking this series up.
3. Tasha Suri, author of The Jasmine Throne (Burning Kingdoms)
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri is part of the sapphic trifecta (including The Jasmine Throne, The Unbroken, and She Who Became the Sun). After finishing The Unbroken, The Jasmine Throne is the next on my list from the sapphic trifecta, and if I’m honest, this is the one I’m most excited about. Like with Banebringer, the only reason I haven’t gotten to this book is I don’t want to start any new fantasy series right now.
4. Tamsyn Muir, author of Harrow the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #2)
After reading and loving Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir I hoped I would read Harrow the Ninth right away. However, I wanted to wait for the paperback edition to come out so I wouldn’t have to buy two versions of the book. By the time I got my hands on the sequel, I was already distracted by other books. I did read about 100 pages into Harrow the Ninth but ended up putting it back down because I wasn’t in the right headspace. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pick it up again soon!
5. Sarah Chorn, author of The Necessity of Rain
I read and reviewed Of Honey and Wildfire’s by Sarah Chorn a while back so I was excited to hear she was coming out with The Necessity of Rain this year. When it comes to book covers, Sarah Chorn’s books always have the prettiest art. She also has a very lyrical style of writing that I thoroughly enjoy.
6. Racquel Marie, author of Ophelia After All
I preordered this book so long ago I almost bought it again when it was released! This coming of age, YA novel follows a boy-crazy teen girl who begins questioning her sexuality after developing a crush on a cute girl. After hearing this premise I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. I began questioning what I wanted from life in my late teens, so I already feel a special kinship to this book. It’s no wonder I almost bought it a second time!
7. Rebecca Mix, author of The Ones We Burn
Shortly after I started drifting away from YA books, I came across Rebecca Mix talking about her debut, The Ones We Burn. As soon as she mentioned her himbo lesbian main character, I drifted right back into YA for this book. Mercifully, it’s a standalone fantasy novel so it won’t be as much of a commitment as some of the other fantasy books on this list. I can’t wait for it to release in November!
8. Natasha Alterici, author of Heathen
In my recent search for graphic novels to read I came across Heathen, a Norse-inspired story about a young Viking woman who is banished from her home. She retaliates by setting out to free a cursed Valkerie and fight back against the corrupt god that caused her banishment. If that isn’t the most badass premise you’ve ever read, then please recommend whatever books you’ve been reading.
9. K.S. Villoso, author of The Wolf of Oren-Yaro (Chronicles of the Bitch Queen)
The Wolf of Oren-Yaro follows a queen with a history of taking what she wants and damning the consequences. I loved the idea of following a female protagonist who was allowed to be flawed and selfish. I learned about this series through K.S. Villoso’s Twitter account where she posted a few pieces she wrote on her series. I loved the themes she included in her writing and had to add her books to my TBR.
10. Timandra Whitecastle, author of Queens of the Wyrd
A Norse Mythology-inspired fantasy with an all-female cast? Sign me up! I don’t know much about the author of this book, but according to the reviews I’ve read Queens of the Wyrd explores family, motherhood, and friendship. I don’t think I’ve read any fantasy novels that explore motherhood, so I’m really excited to read Queens of the Wyrd.
