Wyrd and Wonder 2021: We’re Going on an Adventure

Hello Readers,
Welcome to the first day of Wyrd and Wonder 2021! This is my second year participating in the month-long fantasy celebration with Imyril, Lisa, and Jorie. As I mentioned in a previous post, Wyrd and Wonder was the first blogging event I ever participated in, so it holds a special place in my heart. I can’t wait to spend the next month sharing my love of fantasy.

Over the next 30 days, I’ll be reading and reviewing fantasy books on my blog and participating in the Wyrd and Wonder challenge prompts. Because I’m only human, I’ll only be able to write full posts for a few prompts, so I’ll complete most of the challenge prompts on the Word Wilderness Instagram page.

Want to join the fun? You can find the sign up form here.

Today’s prompt is “We’re Going on an Adventure” so I’ve decided to share the books that will be taking me on an adventure for the next month. Without further ado, I present to you my TBR for Wyrd and Wonder 2021:

Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas

I finished Aiden Thomas’s debut, Cemetery Boys, earlier this year and I can’t wait to read his second novel. Lost in the Never Woods follows Wendy as she journeys into the woods to find children that have been mysteriously disappearing.

Banebringer and Sweetblade by Carol A. Park

I received these two books last year in a giveaway and I’ve been looking for a chance to pick them up. Banebringer is the first of The Heretic Gods series. Sweetblade is a standalone novel from the same series that follows Ivana’s story after she accepts help from a mysterious stranger.

A Reaper at the Gates (An Ember in the Ashes #3) by Sabaa Tahir

To be completely honest, I read this book before May. BUT! by the time I finish it and write a review it will be May, so I figured I’d add it (plus I need a reason to finally write reviews for the previous books in this series). Anyway, I highly recommend picking up An Ember in the Ashes if you’re interested in a dark YA fantasy with all the angst you could ask for ;).

Reaper Man (Discword #11, Death #2) by Terry Pratchett

This is another book I started before May (sorry), but I’ll be publishing my review during Wyrd and Wonder.

The Unbroken by C.L. Clark

Do I need to say it again? I already started this book (as I write this post I’m realizing that I have a problem). Anyway, The Unbroken follows Touraine and Luca. Touraine is desperate after unfortunate circumstances cause her to become a murder suspect. Fortunately (or unfortunately) for Touraine, Luca needs someone desperate to negotiate peace with the rebels so she can remove her uncle from the throne.

The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk

I’ve been meaning to pick up a book by this author and thought this would be a good place to start. The Midnight Bargain follows Beatrice Clayton as she struggles to live out her dream of becoming a Magus when her family depends on her marriage to save them from poverty.

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buelhman

I didn’t have this book on my radar until recently when positive reviews from FanFiAddict and Before We Go Blog convinced me to add it to my TBR. The Blacktongue Thief is your typical high fantasy novel with mythical creatures, witty humor, and two unlikely allies. The book comes out towards the end of May, so I’m hoping to get to it in time to post a review for Wyrd and Wonder. We’ll see how things go.

A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth

A Dark and Hollow Star is an urban fantasy novel that follows four teens that must track down a killer, whose series of murders threatens to expose faeries to the human world.

the bone shard daughter, andrea stewart

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

I’m reading this book as part of the Wyrd and Wonder Read-Along. I’ve seen so many great reviews of this book, but until now it never made it to my TBR. Well, I hope everyone’s happy. The Wyrd and Wonder Read-Along has finally convinced me to pick it up.

I think my Wyrd and Wonder 2021 TBR is a bit more manageable than last year, especially considering I’ve already started a few of the books. Hopefully, I can get through most of these books. Priority-wise, I know I’ll finish The Bone Shard Daughter as part of the read-along. I also know I’ll finish the three books I’ve already started. From there we’ll see! I have a great list of books to choose from.

    1. Yes! I’m still in the middle of it (had to finish some other books and got sidetracked) but it’s really good so far. I also hear it gets better. Like the beginning is slow, but once the premise of the story is in place it takes off. I haven’t noticed that it’s that slow (it’s been interesting so far) so I’m excited to get to the rest of the book.

  1. Hallo, Hallo Peyton,

Welcome back to Wyrd And Wonder!! I’m thrilled to bits you’ve decided to join the fun all over again and continue to enjoy the fantastical community we’re building. Off your list, I borrowed “The Unbroken” from my local library but I think I’m going to run out of time to read it — sadly! Maybe not, time will tell but I’m wicked overjoyed I get to join my first group RAL this year!! Imyril gave me a sweet surprise which you’ll see on my Year 4 Intro post (linked to this comment).

I tend to read a lot of Middle Grade & YA Fantasy as oft-times the adult Fantasy novels I want to be reading are not my cuppa when it comes to content or CW/TW. I still strive to seek more out — but you’ll sometimes find me reading more MG/YA than anything else. I have a true mix of stories and subniches of genre this year… plus two new novels by a beloved author I’m reading too! I even have some NetGalley audiobook reviews which tickles me with joy. I’m striving to increase my ratio of reviews on NG this year.

I can’t wait to see your posts and read your reviews — even if I can’t read them all myself hearing your thoughts will be just as good. I do that quite often… read about stories which aren’t my cuppa and take something positive out of another reader’s experiences.

    Have a wicked wonderful May!!

    1. Hi Jorie!

I’m glad to be back. It’s tough when you want to read a book, but don’t quite have the time! That happened to me with a couple books I borrowed from the library last month.

Middle grade and YA can definitely be a nice break from heavy content. I still feel new to adult fantasy so I’m figuring out what I like. I’ll have to watch your blog for some YA/Middle-grade recommendations! I might have to read something lighter after I finish some of the darker books I’m reading this month.

      Have a fantastic May

    1. I hope you like Lost in the Never Woods! I have a few books that didn’t make it one my TBR that I might end up reading too. Banebringer does have an epic cover! It’s one that I really want to get to this month. Happy reading to you too!
