Hello Readers,
I’m a bit behind on The Bone Shard Daughter read-along posts this week, but I’m loving the book so far! I’ll have to spend some time tomorrow catching up. For week #2 I’ll be discussing chapters 12-23, so be aware of spoilers ahead if you haven’t read that far!***

Q&A For The Bone Shard Daughter Read-Along Week #2

Jovis has begun to show strange new strengths since escaping Deerhead Island. What do you think is going on?

I have no idea! Jovis has speculated that exposure to Mephi is causing him to gain new powers, but I have my doubts. Apparently the enemies the Emperor is supposedly protecting the empire from had magic, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out Jovis had some sort of connection to those people. There are a couple mention’s in the book that Jovis isn’t the same race as the people he grew up with, so it’s possible his lineage comes from the empire’s enemies, unless I misinterpreted. (Also, I apologize for forgetting the name of the enemy empire and being too lazy to look it up in the book).

What is your understanding of witstone, and the strange effect it has on Mephi?

I’ve been wondering if the witstone is extracted from sea serpents (despite my conviction last week that Mephi was a construct I’m not so sure anymore). It would make sense. Since Mephi’s breath works the same way that witstone does, it’s possible that other sea serpents were killed to create witstone. Mephi could just be recognizing where it came from.

Lin attends two rather different – and rather awkward – family dinners. Why do you think her father invited her to eat with him? What do you make of Bayan now?

I think the emperor invites Lin to dinner for control. He wants to check up on Lin and Bayan. If they step out of line, he corrects them with threats and violence, like with Bayan. He’s also reminding them of the power he holds over them.

Now that I’ve learned more about Bayan, I can’t help but feel sympathy for him. He doesn’t actually want control of the empire, but he does what he has to for survival.

What do you make of the rebel plan and the deal they offer Jovis? Do you trust them to deliver what they’ve promised? How do you think Phalue will react to their plan?
